Standard Soil/Sediment Lab Equipment
- Filtration Apparatus
- pH Meters
These pieces of equipment allow standard method 2540D and EPA Method 160.2 to be used to determine total suspended solids, organic matter loss on ignition, and sediment grain size as well as other analytical soil/sediment procedures.
Isotemp® Programmable Muffle Furnace
Used to perform organic matter loss on ignition
Elementar Vario EL CNHS Elemental Analyzer
Carbon, nitrogen, hydrogen, and sulfur concentration determination
Standard Operating Procedures: Vario EL III CHNOS Elemental Analyzer
LS 13 320 Multi-Wavelength Optical Bench Laser Diffraction Particle Size Analyzer with Liquid Module and Flow Cell
Measures the size distribution of particles suspended in liquid.
Standard Operating Procedures: LS 13 320 Laser Diffraction Particle Size Analyzer
Used to separate sand particles.
X Ray Flourescence Spectrometer
The X-MET3000TXS+ handheld elemental analyzer allows for heavy metal screening and measurement of contaminated soil. The instrument is classified as a portable hand-held open-beam X-ray tube based analytical X-ray device.
Standard Operating Procedures: X-MET3000TXS+ Handheld XRF Analyzer
The GC4020 GE Co-Axial Detector and DSA 1000 Digital Spectrum Analyzer with 747 Series Lead Shield is used to identify and quantify gamma-ray emitting radionuclides in soil samples. The gamma-ray spectroscopy system is a combination of the high-resolution germanium detector, 16K multi-channel analyzer, and the lead shield which is used to prevent high background counts
Standard Operating Procedures: GC4020 GE Co-Axial Detector and DSA 1000 Digital Spectrum Analyzer with 747 Series Lead Shield
MS3 Magnetic Susceptibility System
The MS3 Magnetic Susceptibility System includes a portable measuring instrument, the MS3 meter, and three sensors controlled by a handheld, Trimble Nomad field data logger loaded with Bartsoft control software. Each sensor is specially designed for a specific application and sample type and is specific to laboratory or field use. The MS3 Magnetic Susceptibility Meter generates a low frequency, low intensity, AC magnetic field around the sensor. When the sensor is placed near a sample with magnetic susceptible composition, there is change in the field that is sensed by the system. The response is converted to a (volume) magnetic susceptibility reading from positive and negative values associated with the different kinds of magnetic materials in the sample.
Standard Operating Procedures: MS3 Magnetic Susceptibility System
